Over the last decade the world has got the concept directed at increasing the combat capabilities of aircraft through profound upgrading of their equipment and minimum changing of the aircraft structure. The approach enables to obtain aircraft of high combat efficiency with costs of the order less than those when purchasing new modern aircraft.
Development of this concept has resulted in profound upgrading of MIG-21 BIS aircraft the programm of which envisages the replacement of avionics and equipping the aircraft with modern bombing armament with simultaneous application of the regular armament of the aircraft. All the main aircraft systems are subject to upgrading: the power supply system, fuel system, air-conditioning system, air cooling system, powerplant, air traffic control and identification system.
As a result of upgrading, the MIG-21BIS aircraft attains multirole and tactical capabilities.
It can perform the following tasks:
interception and simultaneous tracking of up to 8 targets in look-up and look-down modes;
conduct of effective air combat at medium ranges with simultaneous attack of two the most dangerous targets and their destruction with active or heat homing missiles as per the principle “launch and leave”;
conduct of maneuverable air combat at close ranges at various radar close combat modes, as well as with use of helmet mounted target designation system with launch of highly maneuverable close combat heat homing missiles;
execution of assault missions with use of mapping mode with various degrees of resolution, with the ability of target designation of surface and above-water targets and their destruction with air-to-surface missiles or with corrected bombs as per the principle “launch and leave”;
destruction of operating surface or ship radars with air-to-radar missiles also operating as per the principle “launch and leave”;
conduct of air combat and destruction of surface targets with non-guided weapons and gun;
interception of targets at far ranges at including the aircraft as a supporting one to the group with MIG-31 leader aircraft in interaction mode.
All this enables to increase combat efficiency of the modernized aircraft as much as 8 times at retaining the basic flight performances.
MiG-21 BIS is designed by Mykoyan Design Bureau.
